Working with a plastic mold maker in China gives OEM buyers access to deep tooling capacity, but the difference between a smooth program and a delayed launch usually comes down to how the tool is specified up front. This page explains what a China-based tooling partner delivers, how mould quotes are structured, and which technical points to confirm before a purchase order is issued.
A qualified tooling partner does more than cut steel. The scope typically covers DFM review of your part design, mold flow analysis, tool design and machining, assembly and T1 sampling, plus iteration until parts meet drawing tolerances. Injection moulds for packaging, medical, automotive and consumer applications each carry different requirements for steel grade, venting, cooling and ejection.
A standard single-cavity or multi-cavity tool runs 25-45 days to first samples (T1), depending on complexity, cavity count and the number of slide actions. After T1, expect one to three iteration rounds for dimension and cosmetic adjustments. Production tools with hot runner systems add roughly one week versus cold runner designs.
Mold pricing is driven by part size, cavity count, steel selection and tool complexity, not by the supplier's location alone. When comparing offers, check what each quote includes: mold base standard, number of samples, design revisions after T1, and whether the tool is guaranteed for a stated cycle count. A detailed cost breakdown is available in our guide on injection molding and mold cost drivers.
