Thin wall packaging molding - the high-speed corner of injection moulding, also called thin wall injection molding - is where the product is a container, the wall is thin, and the cycle is measured in seconds. In this segment the economics are decided by cycle time, shot weight and cavity count, so mould, machine and decoration must be specified as one system rather than three separate purchases. This page covers what Chinese moulders produce in the thin wall segment, the specification points that decide part economics, and the commercial terms that apply to export orders.
Thin wall parts run 0.25 to 0.60 mm, and the practical limit is the flow length from gate to fill relative to wall thickness. Pushing wall thickness down without raising injection speed and pressure shows up as short shots, frozen stress and warped lids, so a capable moulder quotes cycle time and part weight per cavity rather than just the piece price.
High-cavitation tools with balanced hot runners and fast ejection are what make thin wall packaging molding pay: a 32-cavity lid tool on a 6 to 8 second cycle can amortise in months, while an under-cavitated tool never catches up. Ask for the steel grade, cavity count and cycle time in the quotation, and confirm the tool suits your machine tonnage.
In-mould labelling places a pre-printed film in the tool before every shot, removing a downstream step and surviving hot-fill and dishwashing, but it demands film registration discipline. IMD adds a shaped decorated insert, and post-mould labelling remains the low-tooling fallback for short runs and frequent artwork changes.
Minimum order quantities follow the production run, not the pallet: a thin wall container programme usually starts at tens of thousands of pieces per SKU, because that is what one continuous run of a multi-cavity tool produces. Tooling lead time runs eight to twelve weeks for a new high-cavitation tool, and sample approval follows the standard T1 sequence with dimensional and drop-test reports. For material behaviour at filling temperatures, the PE vs PP packaging guide is a useful companion, and the injection molding process guide covers the fundamentals.
