Math manipulatives look like the simplest parts in the toy industry: a 1 cm cube, a rod of ten, a flat of a hundred. They are also the most intolerant of tolerance. A classroom set where ten cubes do not exactly equal one rod teaches the wrong lesson, and a set where the yellow of this year's cubes does not match last year's rods cannot be sold into the same school. The specification is not the dimension; it is the relationship between pieces and the colour system across years.
We mould base-ten counting cubes, rods and flats in bulk for educational publishers, school supply programmes and toy retailers with a classroom channel.
A 1 cm cube has to stack ten-high against a rod within a tolerance that a child can see. At plus or minus 0.1 mm, a stack of ten can be up to 1 mm off the rod, which is visible when the two are laid side by side in a lesson. The tool is therefore cut to a tighter band than the drawing, the material is a filled PP chosen for low shrinkage variation between lots, and the dimensional check is done on a sampled basis per lot with a report the publisher can file against the curriculum.
Manipulative colour systems are de facto standards: the publishers who dominate a market set the colour of each piece, and a school that bought last year's set expects this year's to match. We hold the colour standard as a physical master per programme and match to it under a specified light source, with a delta-E target stated in the quality agreement. The pigment system is declared, because a colour change is also a compound change, and the compound is what the compliance file covers.

Teachers notice weight. A cube that is too light does not sit still on a desk and does not give the feedback a four-year-old expects from stacking; a cube that is too heavy makes a thousand-piece set a carrying problem. The weight is set by the fill level in the compound and by the wall, and both are fixed per programme with a sample the publisher approves. Where a programme sells into both domestic and export markets, the weight is quoted per piece and per set, because the freight class changes with it.
Manipulatives are a cavitation business like plush components: high-cavitation tools, long runs, and a rolling schedule. The tool is the programme: once a cube tool is cut, the part number is fixed for years, which is why the specification review before the tool is the most valuable service we provide. Lead time is 20 days for repeat lots, tooling build runs four to six weeks, and we supply against an annual schedule with quarterly call-offs, which is what lets a school supply programme hold its price across a school year.
EN 71-3 covers the heavy metals and the migration limits, and classroom programmes in the US add CPSIA with the tracking label applied at the packing stage. Age grading is stated on the tub, and it is not decoration: the grading drives the small-parts assessment, and a flat with a chamfer that can be bitten off is a different grading from a cube. Publishers usually ask for the third-party test report on the compound plus a declaration per lot, and we supply both without needing to name the laboratory.
Our STEM circuit kit components programme covers the electronics half of the category, and the educational toy category lists the full range.
