Pull-back spring motor, 3 to 6 m travel

A pull-back car looks like the simplest toy in a catalogue and is one of the hardest to make profitable. The unit price is low, the order quantity is high, and a single weak point in the gearbox turns a whole container into returns. Most of the engineering work sits in three places: the spring, the gear train and the axle retention.

We mould pull-back cars from 9 to 15 cm, with an in-house gearbox design that has been through several revisions and can be adapted to a new body shell without new gearing.

How the drive works

Pulling the car backwards winds a flat spiral spring through a reduction gear train. Releasing it unwinds the spring through the same train in reverse, driving the rear axle. The reduction ratio decides the trade-off between travel distance and torque: a taller ratio gives a longer run on a smooth floor, a shorter ratio gives more push on carpet. Cars aimed at hard floors usually sit around 4 to 6 metres of travel; carpet-friendly versions are geared shorter and run 2 to 3 metres.

Where cheap cars fail

  • Gear teeth strip because the module is too fine for the torque
  • The spring anchor pulls out of the housing after a few hundred cycles
  • Rear axle walks sideways and the wheel rubs the body
  • Body shell and chassis tabs crack when a child drops the car

Each of these is solved in the tool, not in assembly: a coarser gear module, a steel spring anchor insert, moulded axle retainers, and a chassis with a sacrificial rib that flexes instead of cracking.

Body shells and licensing

Body shells are modelled from scratch to a generic passenger car, truck or construction machine form. We do not copy a production vehicle's sheet metal or badge a toy with a real marque: replicating a car maker's design requires a licence from that manufacturer, and we ask the buyer to supply written authorisation before tooling starts where a licensed vehicle is intended.

Packing

Standard packing is a printed blister or a window box with a display carton. Where the car is sold through e-commerce, we recommend a corrugated inner tray: the blister protects the paint, but a drop-tested tray reduces the damage rate in parcel networks by a wider margin than the extra packaging cost.

Testing

Cars are cycle tested on the bench to the buyer's target, drop tested from 90 cm onto tile, and checked for small parts and sharp edges. Where EN 71, ASTM F963 or CPSIA testing is required, samples go to an accredited laboratory appointed by the buyer.
