Garden water hardware lives outdoors, full time, in the sun, holding pressure, and it is dragged across patios and rolled up wet. A garden programme that buys planters one season and hose hardware the next is buying a different animal: the planter is judged on appearance, the connector is judged on whether it still seals in year three. The moulding decisions that matter are the UV package, the seal geometry and the pressure path, and all three are locked at the tool stage.
We mould hose reels, quick connectors and water-stop fittings for garden retailers, watering programmes and outdoor accessory brands, in UV-stabilised PP and acetal.
A quick connector is two moulded halves with a valve each and a seal between them, and the failure mode is always the seal. The seal is a TPE or NBR gasket in a moulded groove with the compression set by the groove depth, and the valve is a moulded poppet that opens on coupling and closes on decoupling. The valve has to crack open at a low enough pressure that a garden tap can open it and seal hard enough that it does not drip when decoupled under pressure. We pressure-cycle first articles and report the leak rate after the cycle count, because a connector that seals on the bench and leaks after a season of cycling has a valve seat problem, not a gasket problem.
A reel is a frame, a drum and a handle, and the frame carries the weight of a full hose when the reel is lifted by its handle. The frame is a ribbed PP structure with the ribs running along the load path, and the handle bosses are backed by ribs that run into the frame rather than standing alone. The drum is a large thin part that has to hold its shape when a hose is wound tight, and the shape holds only if the wall is uniform, which is a cooling-circuit decision in the tool rather than a material decision.
| Reel frame | Ribbed UV PP, handle load-tested to filled weight |
|---|---|
| Drum | UV PP, uniform wall, 30 to 60 m hose capacity |
| Quick connector | PP body, acetal valve, TPE or NBR seal |
| Water stop | Insert-moulded or acetal, auto-shutoff on decouple |
| UV package | HAS tuned to pigment, 1,500 h QUV in production colour |
| Packing | Nested reels, bulk connectors |
| MOQ | 500 reels, 5,000 connectors per programme |
Garden hardware sees more sun than almost any other moulded product, and unmodified PP chalks and embrittles within a season. The UV package is a hindered amine stabiliser tuned to the pigment system, and the practical target is 1,500 hours of QUV without chalking or a significant drop in impact. Two cautions we state on every quote: a light colour and a dark colour from the same compound are not equivalent, and the verification has to be run in the production colour, not in natural. A programme that changes its colourway mid-season is changing its UV file with it.
Connectors and reels hold static pressure and see surge when a tap is opened fast. The pressure path is a series of walls and bosses, and the surge is what finds the thin wall. First articles are pressure-tested to the programme's rated pressure plus a margin and held rather than cycled, because a slow leak under hold is a wall or a boss problem that a cycle test hides. Reels are also tested with the filled hose weight, because the handle load and the drum deflection under load are the two ways a reel fails in the hand.
Garden water hardware declares to REACH for the material stream, and the compound declaration covers the UV package as a declared additive system. Programmes that sell into markets with drinking-water contact rules confirm the contact class before the tool is cut, because a connector rated for non-potable use is a different seal and gasket file from one rated for drinking water, and the gasket is the part that carries the rating.
Our planter programme covers the container half of the category, and the garden and outdoor category lists the full range.
