Why POM deserves a specification, not a nickname
Polyoxymethylene (POM), commonly called acetal, is widely considered for gears, rollers, valve components, conveyor parts and other precision items that need low friction and stable dimensions. Buyers sometimes write only "Delrin" on a request for quotation. That is not enough. Delrin is associated with a homopolymer family, while the broader acetal category also includes copolymer grades with different processing and long-term performance characteristics.
The sourcing market is material. The reviewed source reports global POM volume of 1.92 million tons in 2026, rising to 2.41 million tons by 2031 at a 4.72% CAGR. It also reports that automotive applications account for 30.71% of POM consumption and that Asia-Pacific holds 66.72% of the market. Those figures indicate a deep supply base, but they do not make one grade interchangeable with another.
Homopolymer versus copolymer
The first decision is not brand; it is polymer structure and application fit.
| Buying question | POM homopolymer | Acetal copolymer |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanical strength | Higher typical strength and stiffness | Slightly lower typical strength, often broader processing tolerance |
| Reported tensile range | 75-85 MPa | 60-70 MPa |
| Dimensional behaviour | Strong choice for precision parts when processing is controlled | Often selected where chemical resistance and centreline-porosity control matter |
| Commercial position | Source reports a 10-20% cost premium | Useful baseline for cost-sensitive parts |
| Typical RFQ mistake | Treating a brand name as the complete specification | Assuming every copolymer grade has the same food-contact status |
The reported ranges are screening benchmarks, not acceptance criteria. The supplier should identify the exact resin producer, grade code, colour, additive package and test method. A buyer should then put the required tensile, impact, dimensional and temperature limits into the drawing or quality agreement.
Food-contact status is grade-specific
"POM is food safe" is not a valid compliance statement. Food-contact acceptance applies to a particular formulation, manufacturing route and intended use. Colourants, lubricants, glass fibre and other additives can change the regulatory position even when the base polymer remains POM.
The source guide references FDA 21 CFR 177.2470 and 177.2480 and EU Regulation 10/2011 for food-contact applications. Buyers should use those references as a starting point and verify which provision actually applies to the quoted grade and finished article. A declaration should name the resin grade and intended conditions of use rather than simply repeat "FDA compliant" on a sales sheet.
For a regulated project, request:
- A resin declaration or letter of guaranty identifying the manufacturer and grade.
- The applicable FDA or EU regulatory reference and any conditions or limitations.
- Overall and specific migration results where required for the destination market.
- Colourant and additive declarations for the exact production formulation.
- Lot-level material traceability from incoming resin to finished parts.
- A change-control commitment covering resin, colour, lubricant and process changes.
A declaration for natural resin does not automatically cover a black, blue or lubricated compound. The document set must match the purchased configuration.
Molding and machining risks to control
POM parts may be injection molded from pellets or machined from sheet and rod. The two routes create different risks.
Injection molding is usually the volume route. Buyers should ask how the factory controls resin handling, melt temperature, mold temperature, packing, cooling and shrinkage. A dimension measured immediately after molding may change as the part conditions, so the inspection timing and environment should be defined. Gate location and flow direction also matter for flatness and gear accuracy.
Machining avoids mold investment for prototypes and low volumes, but it does not remove material risk. Stock shape quality, internal stress and centreline porosity can affect a machined bore or sealing face. Specify whether the part must be cut from extruded or compression-molded stock and require the stock grade to appear on the certificate.
For either route, do not accept an unqualified promise of "tight tolerance." Mark critical-to-quality dimensions on the drawing, state the measurement method, and agree whether capability data or a first-article report is required.
Supplier evaluation checklist
A capable POM supplier should be able to answer six questions without relying on marketing language:
- What is the exact resin manufacturer and grade code?
- Is the quoted material homopolymer or copolymer, and why was it selected?
- Which food-contact document applies to the exact colour and additive package?
- How are resin lots, molded batches and inspection records linked?
- Which dimensions are measured in-process and which are measured after conditioning?
- What requires buyer approval before a material or process change?
For molded parts, also review the tool design, cavity count, gate, cooling layout and expected maintenance plan. For machined parts, review stock-shape certificates, stress-relief practice and the method used to detect internal defects.
A practical RFQ structure
Build the RFQ in layers so quotations can be compared:
- Part definition: 2D drawing, 3D model, application and annual volume.
- Material: POM homopolymer or copolymer, exact grade or approved alternatives, colour and additives.
- Performance: tensile, impact, friction, wear, temperature and chemical-exposure requirements.
- Compliance: destination market, food type, contact time, temperature and required declarations or migration tests.
- Quality: critical dimensions, sampling plan, first-article report, traceability and change control.
- Commercial: tooling ownership, sample quantity, production MOQ, packing and delivery terms.
Approved alternatives should be listed by grade, not by vague phrases such as "same quality." If the factory proposes a substitute, require a side-by-side property and compliance review before samples are made.
Buyer conclusion
POM can deliver repeatable precision and low-friction performance, but the category name alone does not define the part. Choose between homopolymer and copolymer based on the application, verify the exact grade's food-contact evidence, and connect every finished lot to its resin record. That process is more reliable than buying a brand name or accepting a generic "food grade" claim.
