Why PBT is on more 2026 RFQs
Polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) sits between commodity polyolefins and high-performance polymers such as PEEK. That middle position explains why it appears in more engineering-plastics enquiries: it delivers heat resistance and dimensional stability at a cost that still works for high-volume connectors, sensor housings and under-bonnet parts.
Market data supports the shift. The global PBT resin market was valued at USD 5.29 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach USD 7.89 billion by 2031, a CAGR of 6.55%. The connector market that absorbs most of that resin is forecast to grow from USD 87.03 billion in 2025 to USD 168.50 billion in 2034 at a 7.20% CAGR, driven by automotive electrification, 5G telecommunications and industrial automation. Automotive and electronics applications together account for 60%+ of PBT demand, with connector housings as the primary use case.
Property benchmarks buyers should specify
Vague requests such as "PBT natural grade" produce quotations that cannot be compared. Name the properties that matter for the part and require the supplier to confirm them on the certificate of analysis.
| Property | Typical PBT range |
|---|---|
| Density | 1.3-1.4 g/cm³ |
| Tensile strength | 50-60 MPa |
| Continuous use temperature | 120-140°C |
| Short-term heat resistance | up to 150°C |
| Low-temperature toughness | down to -40°C |
| Moisture absorption | below 0.1% |
Two of these deserve attention in RFQs. Moisture absorption below 0.1% is why PBT holds dimensions in humid environments better than PA6 or PA66, but it does not remove the need for drying discipline before processing. And PBT has a glass transition temperature lower than competing high-grade plastics, so a part that sees sustained load near its continuous-use ceiling should be validated by test rather than by datasheet comparison.
Choosing the grade family
- Unfilled PBT for housings, bobbins and connectors where flow into thin walls and a good surface matter.
- Glass-fibre reinforced PBT (commonly 15-30%) where stiffness, creep resistance and dimensional stability under load are decisive.
- Flame-retardant PBT for electrical and appliance parts, with the required UL 94 classification named in the RFQ rather than assumed.
- Recycled or PCR-containing PBT where a brand owner has set recycled-content targets. Confirm the PCR percentage, the certification scheme and whether mechanical properties are re-tested per batch.
Glass fibre changes the whole quotation. It raises stiffness but increases tool wear, affects surface finish and can introduce anisotropy that warps a flat part. Ask the molder to state fibre loading, drying conditions and expected shrinkage before tooling steel is cut.
Certification and compliance by destination market
Compliance is scored in the RFQ, not checked afterwards. Requirements differ by market:
| Market | Framework | Typical evidence |
|---|---|---|
| European Union | REACH, RoHS, EU 10/2011 for food contact | REACH registration, RoHS compliance certificate |
| United States | FDA 21 CFR for food contact, UL 94 for flammability | FDA letter of guaranty, UL certification |
| Recycled-content programmes | PCR content by 2027 (sector-dependent) | Certification of 25-35% PCR, chain-of-custody documents |
If the part is a connector or any live electrical component, also confirm the comparative tracking index, glow-wire performance and the exact UL file number, because a "flame retardant" claim without a listing is not usable evidence.
What the commercial terms usually look like
Buyers reference published cost benchmarks during negotiation. Tooling for plastic parts ranges from USD 1,500 to USD 80,000 depending on complexity, unit prices span USD 0.05 to USD 6.00, and standard payment terms follow a 30/30/40 structure — 30% deposit, 30% after tooling approval, 40% before shipment.
Use those numbers as a sanity check, not as a target. A complex multi-cavity tool with hot runners and tight tolerances sits at the top of the tooling range, while a simple single-cavity prototype tool sits near the bottom. Suppliers who publish these parameters up front tend to reach agreement faster than those who hide the cost structure.
How buyers score PBT suppliers
Engineering plastics procurement is multi-dimensional, unlike commodity resin buying where price per kilogram dominates. The criteria that carry the most weight are:
- Quality certification — ISO 9001, material test reports, batch consistency and traceability.
- Supply chain resilience — dual-sourcing capability, lead-time reliability and buffer inventory.
- Regulatory compliance — REACH, RoHS, FDA or automotive documentation as applicable.
- Technical support — application engineering, material selection guidance and troubleshooting.
- Sustainability credentials — recycled grades, PCR certification and carbon-footprint data.
- Price competitiveness — total cost of ownership rather than unit price, with volume terms.
In 2026 procurement teams explicitly evaluate suppliers on cost, delivery performance and the ability to handle variable feedstock conditions. Dual sourcing is treated as mandatory for supply chain resilience rather than optional. A supplier that can demonstrate backup production capacity and transparent lead times scores higher than one that only wins on price.
Practical RFQ checklist
- Resin family, grade and any filler or flame-retardant package, named exactly.
- Target properties from the table above, with test method and acceptance limits.
- Annual volume, batch size and required colour.
- Destination market and the certificates that market requires.
- Tooling ownership, expected shot life and maintenance responsibility.
- Sample, first-article and production inspection plan.
- Payment structure and Incoterms, referencing the 30/30/40 pattern if it fits.
Request trial material before a production order and run it on the real tool under real cycle conditions. A datasheet match does not guarantee that the grade will fill, pack and eject the way the simulation predicted.
