Reflectivity and Color Coding
Retroreflective performance is quoted in mcd/lx, and catalogue studs reach 450-600, well above the 100 minimum many tenders specify. Color carries meaning: white marks lane lines, yellow marks center lines, red and blue warn of wrong-way hazards, and green marks exits. PMMA lenses hold reflectivity because the resin resists yellowing, and the micro-prism geometry returns light toward the driver instead of scattering it, which is why a road stud outperforms paint in rain.
Load, Adhesion and Weathering
Studs must survive traffic rolling, so compression is tested to EN 1463-1 and ASTM D4280, with heavy models rated near 160 kN. Adhesion to asphalt and concrete is verified by pull-out test at 10 kN or more, and impact testing drops a 1 kg hammer from 1 m without cracking. Accelerated weathering beyond 16,000 hours without yellowing supports service lives past ten years in normal traffic, and salt spray and immersion tests confirm the sealed cavity stays dry.
