TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) holds the middle rung of the elastomer ladder: softer and generally cheaper to process than TPU, yet already a finished mouldable elastomer rather than a modifier blended into somebody else's compound — which is what POE is for. This page answers one question: when is TPE the right answer ahead of both? Grade numbers belong on the supplier's TDS, so none are invented here.
Three materials get quoted for "something soft". What decides it is what enters your part and what kills it in service:
| Question | POE | TPE | TPU |
|---|---|---|---|
| What you buy | Modifier resin for a compounder | Ready-to-mould elastomer compound | Ready-to-mould engineering elastomer |
| Duty chosen for | Impact strength, foam, film | Soft touch, grip, sealing lips, closures | Wear, load-bearing recovery, oil, cold |
| Where it loses | Cannot be the soft part alone | Gives up wear life | Costs more; strict drying rules |
"TPE" is a family, not a grade. Name it in every RFQ, or two quotations at the same hardness may describe different materials.
SEBS-based compounds — a hydrogenated styrenic block copolymer extended with oil and filler — are the soft-touch default: easy processing, good colourability, bonding to common substrates after trials, covering most grips, handles, pads and closures. Their limits surface as heat, compression recovery and oil resistance.
Dynamically vulcanised TPV carries a crosslinked rubber phase in a thermoplastic matrix, chosen for better recovery after compression, tolerance of higher continuous service temperature, and improved oil and weathering resistance. Have the limit and compression set quoted, not assumed. Seal-specific selection is written out in TPE vs TPV sealing material.
Hardness is the most over-specified line in a TPE enquiry and the least informative alone:
When either end of the ladder owns the job: impact modification belongs to POE, wear and cold-flex duty to TPU.
Start from the duty. Soft touch and grip usually land on an SEBS compound; recovery, heat or oil contact push towards TPV. Compare both on the same test evidence.
Usually per kilo, but compare cost per acceptable part, including drying, cycle time, colour matching and scrap.
Often for soft-touch and phthalate-restricted uses, though not universally — see TPE vs PVC.
If the part touches food, water or skin, yes: it must name the exact grade and migration conditions. Request it with the quotation.
