POE (polyolefin elastomer) is a metallocene ethylene/alpha-olefin copolymer that is usually bought to change another resin rather than to become the finished part. This page groups POE pellets by the job they do inside a compound — impact modification of PP and PE, compatibilising polyamide blends, foam, encapsulant film and heat-seal layers. Name the carrier resin, the role and the test piece before you ask for a price.
POE is rarely the part. It is the ingredient that moves another resin's behaviour, so a grade only makes sense next to the carrier resin it will be blended into.
| Role | What it changes | Accepted on |
|---|---|---|
| Impact modifier | Low-temperature impact | Compound pellets, moulded bars |
| Grafted compatibiliser | Bond to PA or ABS | Notched impact, blend |
| Foam and sheet | Resilience, low yellowing | Crosslinked plaque |
| Encapsulant, seal layer | Moisture barrier, PID | Laminate, gel content |
Two of these roles need chemistry the neat resin does not have. Polyamide toughening needs a maleic anhydride graft, and encapsulant film needs its adhesive package designed in.
It is a thermoplastic elastomer: it processes like polyethylene and needs no vulcanisation. That shows up in scrap handling — uncrosslinked POE can be re-melted, while a cured foam or encapsulant cannot.
Only for stated reasons. POE carries no acetate group, so no acetic acid is released, and it gives lower moisture transmission and better PID resistance — but it costs more and bonds to glass less easily. Compare the two on the EVA resin page.
Because the carrier resin and the screw set the dispersion. Toughening needs the rubber phase broken into fine particles; that is a compounding result, not a number on a datasheet.
Do not buy to a percentage. Ask the supplier for a loading ladder run on your own carrier resin, then take the level that clears your low-temperature impact target cheapest.
For abrasion and load-bearing soft parts compare TPU or TPE; for polarity-driven bonding stay with EVA; for continuous heat start from engineering plastics.
Sourcing POE? Send the carrier resin, the role, the target test piece and the compliance file to the plastic materials desk. Compare PP resin and PE resin, or send a compound specification to custom molding services.
