PET bottle preform pricing varies far more between quotes than most first-time buyers expect. This guide breaks down the current PET bottle preform price structure by neck finish, preform weight and order volume, so you can tell a competitive quote from an inflated one before committing to a supplier.
What Drives PET Bottle Preform Price
Four factors explain most of the spread in per-piece pricing:
- Preform weight - a 12g preform for a 0.5L bottle costs materially less than a 45g preform for a 5-gallon container; price scales almost linearly with resin consumption.
- Neck finish - PCO 1881, 28mm and 3025 finishes each need dedicated neck inserts and cavity tooling, which affects both unit price and minimum order quantities.
- Order volume - tooling amortisation and line efficiency improve sharply above 100,000 pieces per run; below that, per-piece prices rise quickly.
- Resin market - since preforms are roughly 90% PET resin by weight, quotes track the PET bottle-grade resin index and are typically re-fixed per order, not per year.
Indicative Per-Piece Price Ranges
The following ranges reflect commonly quoted export levels for standard, undecorated preforms at commercial volumes. Treat them as a negotiation baseline rather than a fixed offer:
- 12-18g preforms for water and CSD bottles of 0.4-0.7L: USD 0.030-0.045 per piece
- 22-28g preforms for 1.0-1.5L bottles: USD 0.045-0.065 per piece
- 32-45g preforms for 2.5-5 gallon and wide-mouth containers: USD 0.08-0.14 per piece
- Heat-set and barrier preforms for hot-fill lines: typically 15-30% above standard grades
MOQ and Lead Time Expectations
Most producers quote preforms in lots of 20,000 pieces per neck finish, with 15-25 day lead times for repeat orders. First orders with a new neck design may require a preform mould investment, which is usually recovered across a stated quantity. Neck finish dimensions, weights and stretch-rod considerations are covered in detail in our PET preform specifications guide.
