An injection molding machine price is quoted as a single number, but it is built from a small set of decisions that buyers can control: clamp tonnage, injection unit size, drive type and the auxiliary package. Understanding how those four items move the number is the difference between comparing machines and comparing configurations that happen to share a tonnage label.
Tonnage Sets the Floor
Clamp force is the first cost driver because it determines frame size, platen dimensions and hydraulic or servo capacity. Tonnage is selected from the projected area of the part and the cavity pressure of the resin, with a safety margin. Buying tonnage above the requirement adds capital cost and energy consumption on every cycle; buying below it produces flash and mould damage that no process tuning can fix.
Injection Unit and Screw Diameter
Two machines with the same clamp force can carry very different injection units. Shot size, screw diameter and injection rate must match the part weight and the resin. A large clamp with an undersized shot limits the parts that can run; an oversized injection unit on a small mould exposes the melt to longer residence time and increases the risk of degradation.
Drive Type: Hydraulic, Servo-Hydraulic, All-Electric
- Fixed hydraulic — lowest purchase price, highest energy use, least precise repeatability
- Servo-hydraulic — the usual compromise for general purpose work; meaningful energy savings on long cycles
- All-electric — highest capital cost, best repeatability and cleanest operation for medical, optical and thin-wall packaging
The purchase price difference between these drives is usually recovered or lost on the energy bill and on scrap rate over the machine's life, not on the invoice.
What the Quote Should Break Out
A quotation that only states a total is hard to compare. Ask for the base machine, the injection unit specification, the control package, the auxiliary set (dryer, hopper loader, temperature controller, chiller) and the installation scope as separate lines. Buyers often discover that the cheapest headline price excluded the auxiliaries that a running line needs.
Price should also be read together with precision and repeatability, which is what our note on injection molding machine precision covers. Compare the broader equipment range under plastic machinery, and confirm service and spare-part coverage with verified suppliers before committing — on a machine that runs two shifts, response time is part of the price.
