Stretch Blow vs Extrusion Blow vs Injection Blow Molding: Choosing a Container Process

   2026-10-20 OriginalChina Plastic Factory Editorial110
Summary: Stretch blow vs extrusion blow vs injection blow molding explained: parison versus preform starting forms, biaxial orientation, neck finish, flash, tooling cost and which containers each process fits.

Stretch blow vs extrusion blow vs injection blow molding is the decision that sets neck finish, wall uniformity, clarity and scrap rate for every hollow container you buy. All three clamp a softened plastic intermediate in a mold and inflate it with air; they differ in how that intermediate is made and whether the molecules are stretched first. This comparison walks through each route, the containers it fits, and what to specify in an RFQ.

Stretch blow vs extrusion blow vs injection blow: three starting forms

The cleanest way to separate the processes is to look at the starting form. Extrusion blow molding (EBM) extrudes a tubular parison that hangs from a die head while the mold closes around it. Injection blow molding (IBM) injection-molds a preform around a core rod with the neck thread already finished, then transfers it to the blow station. Stretch blow molding (SBM or ISBM) also starts from an injected preform, but a stretch rod extends it axially 2.5-3.5 times before radial air orients the molecules biaxially. The starting form dictates geometry, resin and tooling cost more than any machine parameter.

Extrusion blow molding: the parison route

EBM handles what no preform route can: handles, offset necks, ducts and industrial parts up to 200+ liters, in HDPE, PP and LDPE. The parison is pinched at the bottom, blown against the cavity wall and cooled, then flash is trimmed at the parting line — trimming is the process signature, and recovered flash is reground at a controlled ratio. Wall uniformity depends on parison programming that varies the die gap during extrusion; without it, hanging parison sag thins one side. Tooling is the cheapest of the three, typically a few thousand to tens of thousands of dollars, which makes EBM the default for jerry cans, detergent bottles and fuel tanks.

Injection blow molding: the neck-precision route

Injection blow molding exists for the neck. Because the preform is injection-molded around a core rod with the finished thread already formed, IBM delivers blemish-free necks with no flash — the reason it dominates pharmaceutical vials, dropper bottles and small cosmetic containers of 5-500 ml. There is no stretch rod, so there is no axial orientation, and clarity is moderate rather than glass-like. The core rod limits geometry to short, round shapes; integral handles and large containers sit outside its range. Tooling costs more than EBM because both a preform mold and a blow mold are required.

Stretch blow molding: biaxial orientation

Stretch blow molding is the process behind every PET water and carbonated bottle. Axial stretch plus radial blow orients the molecules, raising clarity above 90% transmittance, improving barrier and strength, and cutting a 500 ml bottle to 8-10 g. It runs one-stage — injection, stretch and blow in a single machine — or two-stage, where preforms are molded separately and reheated. The two-step route, often called RSBM, suits 30 ml vials through 10 L oil containers and gives the best unit economics at high volume. It is also the most demanding: preform design, stretch ratio and PET grade must be locked together, and handles or irregular shapes are effectively excluded.

Choosing a route and what to send your supplier

  • Handled, offset-neck or large containers in PE and PP: extrusion blow molding
  • Small precision bottles with a critical neck finish: injection blow molding
  • Clear, pressurized or lightweight PET containers: stretch blow molding
  • For any route, send capacity, resin grade, neck tolerance, annual volume, handle requirement and clarity target before requesting tooling quotes
