PE100 vs PE80 Pipe Resin: MRS Classification, Pressure Ratings and Cracking

   2026-10-21 OriginalChina Plastic Factory Editorial120
Summary: What PE100 vs PE80 pipe resin really separates: MRS classification under ISO 9080, SDR pressure classes, PE100-RC slow crack growth resistance and the checks a tender RFQ should carry.

PE100 vs PE80 pipe resin is a comparison most buyers meet the day a tender names one grade and a quotation arrives describing the other. The numbers are strength classifications, not product families: PE100 certifies a minimum required strength of 10.0 MPa and PE80 8.0 MPa, both extrapolated to fifty years at twenty degrees Celsius. That twenty-five percent gap drives wall thickness, pressure class and even whether a pipe can be laid without a sand bed. This guide unpacks the designations and shows what to verify when ordering.

How a pe100 pipe resin classification is earned

Neither designation is claimed on a datasheet alone. Samples run long-term hydrostatic pressure tests under ISO 9080, and the iso 9080 regression extrapolates the 97.5% lower prediction limit to fifty years at 20 °C. ISO 12162 then rounds the result down into the R10 or R20 series, so the printed number is a floor rather than an average: a compound landing between 10.0 and 11.2 MPa prints PE100, anything at 8.0 prints PE80. North American documents express the same class as PE4710 under the hydrostatic design basis system.

How MRS turns into a pressure class

The sdr pressure rating follows from the standard dimension ratio — outer diameter divided by wall thickness — through PN = 20σ/(SDR−1), with σ equal to the MRS divided by a design coefficient of 1.25. For PE100 that yields PN = 160/(SDR−1); for PE80, PN = 128/(SDR−1). Keep the same wall and swap the resin, and the rating drops by about a fifth.

Slow crack growth and the pe100 rc slow crack growth variant

Pressure rating is not the field failure mode that matters. Polyethylene pressure pipes fail through slow crack growth — notches and point loads that grow over years at stresses far below the design line. The notched pipe test in ISO 13479 asks for more than 500 hours from conventional PE100 and more than 8,760 hours from the RC grade, roughly a seventeenfold difference. RC carries the same 10.0 MPa MRS, so it does not raise the pressure class; what it buys is installation freedom, including directional drilling and laying with native soil backfill instead of sand bedding. A quotation that prices RC as a higher pressure grade is misrepresenting the specification.

Temperature limits and joining

Published ratings assume water at 20 °C. Service temperature spans −40 to +60 °C, and ISO 13761 derating — roughly 0.87 at 30 °C and 0.74 at 40 °C for continuous service — must be applied before comparing tenders. Joints are heat fusion: butt fusion at 200-230 °C for larger diameters, electrofusion couplers where space is tight, saddle fusion for service connections. Executed to procedure, a fused joint is as strong as the pipe wall, which is why mechanical joints appear only at transitions to valves and metal pipe.

Where each grade belongs in a sourcing programme

PE100 is the default for municipal water and gas distribution under ISO 4427 and EN 1555, for high-pressure irrigation and for trunk mains where SDR11 at PN16 balances flow, weight and handling. PE80 still earns its place on low-pressure agricultural lines, non-pressure drainage and temporary works, where the wall penalty is small and the resin is cheaper. Separating the two programmes keeps grade discipline in RFQs — pipe-producing regions such as Cangzhou, profiled in our Hebei plastic manufacturers guide, ship both grades, and buyers comparing base resins should also weigh our HDPE versus LDPE breakdown before specifying densities.

What to confirm in a pe100 vs pe80 pipe resin RFQ

  • Compound classification: a resin datasheet naming the designation, not a brochure.
  • Regression evidence: the long-term strength report behind the MRS figure.
  • RC claims: notched pipe test hours whenever PE100-RC is quoted.
  • Standards alignment: ISO 4427 for water, EN 1555 for gas, and the fusion procedure to be applied.

Certified compound suppliers and extrusion plants across every grade are collected in the supplier directory, and the wider material library sits in the plastic materials hub.
