What a plastic extrusion die manufacturer sells
A plastic extrusion die manufacturer builds the extrusion tooling that turns a two-dimensional profile drawing into a controlled melt stream: die body, adapter and transition plates between the extruder and the calibration bench. The die is not the profile shape drilled through steel. Flow channels must deliver melt at equal velocity across the whole cross-section; imbalance shows up as bow, thin walls or drifting dimensions. Flow follows the pressure relation Q = w x h^3 x delta-P divided by 12 x viscosity x land length, so wall thickness dominates: a section twice as thick flows about eight times faster unless the tooling compensates.
Profile and pipe die head design
Two decisions carry every profile extrusion die design: land length and flow balance. The land is the final parallel section of the die opening; it imparts memory to the melt and stabilises the extrudate as it exits. Published land-length-to-wall-thickness ratios by resin run roughly 10:1 for rigid PVC pellets, 15:1 for PVC powder and LDPE, up to 25:1 for ABS - so a 2 mm wall calls for about 20 mm of land. Where a profile mixes thick and thin sections, the designer lengthens the land in fast-flow regions or adds restrictors upstream, holding wall-thickness differences within about 1.5:1.
Pipe die heads work differently: a mandrel pin forms the bore, and spider legs or spiral distributor channels wrap melt evenly around the pin before the land. Die swell, the elastic expansion as melt exits, is managed through land length, temperature and draw. PVC is least forgiving: the die must stay fully streamlined with no stagnation pockets, or black specks appear within hours.
Steel, finishing and adjustment
Die steel follows the resin. General-purpose dies run on pre-hardened tool steel; PVC dies are typically hard chrome plated for acidic degradation products; high-viscosity resins such as PC and PMMA call for hardened die steel. Finishing is functional: channels are polished because roughness retards flow and leaves drag lines. Trial corrections follow a steel-safe discipline - wire EDM to half the measured difference, then polish off the recast - because an unpolished surface changes the balance the designer built.
What to confirm with a plastic extrusion die manufacturer
- Resin, line and output window in kg/h the die is balanced around.
- Land length ratios per wall, and how wall variation is held within about 1.5:1.
- Steel grade and surface treatment - chrome plating for PVC, hardened steel for engineering resins.
- Whether adapter, transition and breaker plates ship with the die, and if simulation ran before cutting.
- Trial scope: who hosts the trial line, correction rounds included, and re-cut pricing.
A window profile die and a pipe die head are different problems wearing the same name: send the drawing, resin data sheet and line pump data with the enquiry. Compare tooling houses in the company directory, browse the plastic moulds catalogue, check the plastic materials catalogue, and read the plastic part design guidelines before freezing the cross-section.
